SFV Investor Knowledge & Learning Series
Knowledge is the fountain of every investment decision. Strive to gain the knowledge
Access to finance has remained a significant challenge over the years, in 2022, 60% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Uganda still struggle to secure funding. Uganda’s startups struggle due to weak local investment, with 53.8% in 2025 citing funding challenges. Meanwhile, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt thrive with strong investor networks and startup policies, highlighting Uganda’s need for local investment growth as well as startup policies.
In 2015, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) ranked Uganda as the world’s most entrepreneurial country, despite the dissimilarity of the GEM research, the ranking reflects Uganda’s startup potential. However, learning that finance is a major constraint, startups must understand investor expectations and the critical challenges of securing private capital.
